REFLECTION

Experience
In this class, I learned eight different typographic systems: axial, radial, dilatational, random, grid, modular, transitional, and bilateral. This exploration involved both theoretical understanding and practical application. Each system presented unique ways to organize text and images, providing distinct structural frameworks for design. This hands-on experience allowed me to explore the nuances and complexities of typography.

In creating a personal wordmark, I encountered challenges in expressing my personality through typography. The task was demanding, requiring continuous refinement of my designs. I spent time experimenting with different styles and ideas, which ultimately enhanced my creativity and imagination. The process also involved animating the design and adjusting color schemes to ensure a cohesive Instagram layout, which was challenging but rewarding.

The last task was creating a font based on a Korean movie reference. Initially, I felt stressed about achieving a balanced and aesthetically pleasing result. However, with continuous effort and valuable feedback from my lecturer, Mr. Vinod, I refined my work. This project taught me the importance of perseverance and attention to detail in font design.

Observation
Throughout these projects, I observed the distinct characteristics and potentials of different typographic systems. Structured systems like grid and modular offered clarity and consistency, essential for clear communication. In contrast, more flexible systems like random and radial allowed for creativity and innovation, breaking conventional boundaries.

In the personal wordmark project, I noticed the importance of consistency and symmetrical balance. Small details, such as the balance and pattern consistency of the wordmark, significantly impact the overall design. As I delved deeper into the process, my designs became more refined and cohesive, highlighting the importance of iteration and refinement.

During the font creation task, I observed that designing a font requires meticulous attention to guidelines and details. Ensuring the consistency of letterforms was more challenging than anticipated, requiring numerous adjustments to achieve the desired visual harmony.

Findings

The integration of typographic systems into my design practice significantly improved both the visual appeal and communicative efficiency of my work. Understanding the historical and cultural evolution of typography enriched my appreciation for the discipline and broadened my design approach. This understanding enabled me to create more dynamic and versatile layouts.

The personal wordmark project helped me develop a deeper sense of self-understanding and identity, which translated into my design work. The challenges faced during the process fostered my growth as a designer, enhancing my skills in visual composition and design techniques.

Creating a font taught me that it is a complex and detailed process requiring experimentation and perseverance. The experience of seeing my font applied to different objects was gratifying and highlighted the importance of practical application in design. Overall, these projects have been instrumental in honing my design skills and have instilled in me a greater appreciation for the art and craft of typography.

This 14 weeks journey through various typographic systems and design projects has been a transformative experience. It has not only expanded my technical skills and creativity but also deepened my understanding of the role of typography in design. The challenges and observations made along the way have provided invaluable insights into the balance between structure and creativity, ultimately contributing to my growth as a designer.
