Project Progression
We have come out with a rationale and color scheme before we started to do our mock-up. Originally people first impression on Yokai are intimidating and scary thus we want to alternate to a cute and minimalist style of bento box.
1. Digitalization
After
discussion, we decided to name it "Yo Bento" .This Yo Bento box cover
features six iconic yokai in a cute "kawaii" style, symbolizing
mystery and depth in Japanese folklore. The hexagonal shape mirrors their
positions and draws from traditional patterns. Inside, partitions shaped like
three yokai separate dishes, embodying Japanese values of balance and beauty. A
central hole enhances both functionality and aesthetics. To heighten surprise
and emphasize yokai symbolism, the lid showcases illustrations of these
mythical creatures, starting with a kappa. Overall, the design embodies
intricate kawaii style of "yokai".
After
conducting research, we gained valuable insights that reasons behind Japanese
Bento Box:
Black:
elegance, simplicity, and formality.
Red: often associated with happiness, good fortune, and celebration in Japanese culture. Opting for a red bento box might convey a festive or auspicious sentiment.
Light Colors: Pastel Green and Yellow shades, can make it easier to spot stains or leftover food, promoting cleanliness and hygiene.
Therefore,
we put exterior color scheme of black and red whereas interior of green and
yellow kappa enhance appealing impact and cultural resonance.
2. Box
Expanded View
After
conceptualizing the design, our next step involved measuring the dimensions of
the bento box cover, both its length, width for interior space.
3. Mock-Up
We used
paper cards to create mock-ups, allowing us to visualize how the design would
fit and function within the bento box. Through careful measurement and
prototyping, we laid the groundwork for bringing our creative vision to life
with precision and efficiency.
4. Final
Outcome
After
finalizing the design, we proceeded to color the exterior of the bento box with
Buncho colors, ensuring a vibrant and visually appealing finish. Next, we
printed out our crafted design to paste on the lid, enhancing its aesthetic
allure. To capture the essence of our Yo Bento, we book the design studio to
photograph Yo Bento and its intricate details, including close-up shots to
showcase its beauty.
Physical
Consultation
Following
the physical presentation on Intercultural Design Lecture, we received valuable
feedback from Ms. Anis, who suggested filming a stop-motion video featuring the
bento box and its contents. Inspired by her insight, we embarked on this
creative endeavor, arranging and capturing each frame to bring Yo Bento to life
in a captivating and dynamic manner. This multimedia approach added depth and
dimension to our project, further highlighting its innovative design and
culinary delights.
Then, we
aimed to create a stop motion video that not only showcased the details of the
bento box but also highlighted the delicious food inside through dynamic story
telling hence we create a mood board stories.
Feedback
Week 6
Ms. Anis satisfied with fast progress on the mock-up project and proposed an exciting idea: creating a video showcasing Yo Bento. She recommended incorporating close-up shots to highlight its details and suggested featuring the delicious food inside as well. Inspired by her suggestion, we eagerly embraced the opportunity to make Stop Motion Video.
Week 7
We're
delighted to hear that Ms. Anis is satisfied with the video!
Reflection
Observation:
When we are doing this project we faced challenges that tested our problem-solving skills and inspired our creativity. One major problem was finding the right materials and deciding on the colors for the bento box. This experience provided us with valuable insights into the importance of color in Japanese culture, particularly the traditional use of black and red for bento boxes. Additionally, we studied how color influences food attractiveness, which inspired us to pick colors carefully in order to improve Yo Bento's presentation. Furthermore, we explored the suitability of different paint colors for the product. Although the final result showed some inconsistency in color, we discovered that keeping the product dry prevents colors from running or fading. In addition, I also learn how to use phone to film stop-motion. We observe other example from YouTube and use on our assignment.
Findings:
The project presented a myriad of challenges, testing our problem-solving skills and igniting our creativity. Among these challenges was the daunting task of selecting suitable materials and deciding on the appropriate colors for the bento box. This endeavor provided us with profound insights into Japanese culture, particularly the significance of traditional black and red colors. Moreover, our exploration into the influence of color on food presentation prompted careful consideration in our design choices for Yo Bento, aiming to enhance its visual appeal. Through experimentation with different paint colors, we learned valuable lessons about material suitability and the importance of maintaining product dryness to prevent color inconsistency. Furthermore, the project served as a platform for personal growth, as we ventured into learning new skills such as stop-motion filming using a phone, demonstrating our adaptability and proactive approach to overcoming challenges. Overall, this experience was not only a test of our abilities but also a journey of cultural exploration and skill development, enriching our understanding and expanding our capabilities.
Experience:
Our group demonstrated great teamwork, commitment, and task sharing throughout our project. From brainstorming ideas to creating a video presentation, each member contributed their skills. Every group member does what they are good at, so we work more effectively. We are respectful to each other, enabling us to have proper discussions and effective communication, which helps us work well together and share creative ideas. Making the Yo Bento mock-up was particularly educational as we discussed materials, made it together, and combine everyone's ideas.
