Task 2 Recap Brief

This task requires you to assess, investigate, document and analyze the existing art work you selected in Task 1. You will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that you have chosen.

Module Information

Instructions

Write a 300- to 350-word visual analysis of the selected design (refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide).

Visual Analysis

382 words

Observation

This art piece is in photograph format. The artwork shows a public space with several large ice blocks dispersed among the public area. People surround the ice blocks, with some approaching to touch and observe the ice up close. The ice blocks vary in size and are spread out in no specific pattern, resembling icebergs that have naturally broken off from a glacier. People surrounding the ice blocks look like black dots surrounding the white shape, creating the effects of the figure-ground principle. As for visual elements, the main colors observed are white and black. Overall, it is a contrast color artwork. The ice blocks vary in size and shape. The positioning of the ice blocks implies a sense of framing for the layout of the installation.

Visual Analysis

The "Ice Watch" present the principle of repetition to create a visually engaging scene. The ice blocks are repeated elements that bring harmony and balance to the space. By using Gestalt principles, the arrangement allows viewers to perceive the exhibit as a collective whole rather than just individual blocks of ice. The similarity in shape and size of the ice pieces, along with their spacing, leads to a unified experience. Furthermore, the interactive nature of the installation, when people walk around and touch the ice, plays with the figure-ground relationship, making the ice sometimes can be the main focus (figure) and also can be part of the background (ground).

Interpretation

Olafur Eliasson, the artist behind "Ice Watch," made this installation to highlight the impact of climate change and the melting of polar ice. Placing real pieces of glacial ice in an urban setting brings the distant concern of environmental changes closer to the public. The melting ice acts as a vivid symbol of these changes, turning global warming into an immediate, sensory experience rather than an abstract idea. Eliasson's goal is to raise public awareness and evoke an emotional response that inspires action against climate change.

This artwork effectively communicates information to viewers. In today's fast-paced era, few people take the time to stop and appreciate its beauty by touching and feeling it. The artwork conveys the message of "climate change," aligning with the awareness goal of USDG Goal 13. Its simplicity doesn't imply stereotypes; rather, it underscores the significance of efficiently and rapidly presenting concepts.
