MINOR PROJECT
Weekly Progress
Week 1- Briefing
This week was focused on establishing the foundation for our learning journey. During the module introductory session, Mr. Mike not only explained the module rubric and assignment breakdown but also outlined the potential topics we could choose for our projects.
For further clarity, we were shown examples from past students, which helped illustrate the level of quality and creativity expected. Overall, this week prepared me both mentally and practically for what’s ahead such as defining problems, dealing with externals and designing proposal.
For our group project, we collaborated with students from different specialisations, bringing diverse skills and perspectives that enhanced the quality and potential of our project.
Week 2 - Empathy Stage
This week marked the official start of our group project, building on our introduction to design thinking. After forming teams, my group selected the WarisanXR. After some discussion, this guidance was instrumental in shaping our next steps.
Mr.Mike asked us to focus on the contextual research.
Week 3 - Contextual Research Kick-off
We officially kicked off our contextual research phase this week. Each of us was assigned different topics related to our client’s project: an AR cultural exhibition in Istana Satu. We created a Miro board and divided the work across themes like cultural background, site history, AR technology, and user engagement.
For my part, I focused on researching different country museums and cultural heritage exhibition that related with AR technology. This helped us understand the cultural context better and ensured we didn’t end up in a situation of “I don’t know what I’m doing.” Learning the background first gave us a strong foundation to build on later.
Week 4 - Refinement on Cantextual Board
After Mr. Mike feedback we updated our Miro board with deeper insights. I add more research on different countries museum exhibitions that implement AR technology and research public interest and review from public. Studying all this case studies gave me a wider understanding and influence my design thinking
Week 5 - Finalize Contextual Board
In this week, we finalize the contextual board and the insights discovery. This week well organised everything.
Week 6- User Persona and Survey
This week, we developed our first batch of user personas based on early research and initial assumptions. I enjoyed exploring who our audience might be, what they expect from a museum, how they engage with exhibits, and what drives their interest. We focused on three key groups: families, students, and foreign visitors. This process really shifted my perspective toward a more user-centered approach. In addition, we prepared the online survey form and drafted the interview questions.
Week 7- Muzium Negara Site Visit
This week, I have meeting with the team and decided to visit Museum Negara for more understanding. I assigned everyone have their own task when visiting Museum. Our task are recording video every section and interviewing visitors and let the visitors help us fill in the survey form. This section help us identify the needs and behavior of our user personas
Week 8- Analysis and refining
This week, we compiled our survey data. The raw data was transformed into actionable design directions, helping me realise the power of data analysis in clearly guiding our next steps.
Week 9 - Istana Satu Site Visit & Client Meeting
Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the site visit due to a clash with exchange student briefing session. But luckily my teammates went and gathered detailed documentation. The client’s expectations also gave us clearer direction on what to focus on going forward.
Week 10 - Proposal Development & Feedback
This week, we worked on our first proposal idea, which focused on ancient Malay palace culture. This idea Mr. Mike felt it wasn’t deeply connected to cultural storytelling. So, we decided to have another discussion and come out with new ideas.
Week 11 - Proposal Ideation: Introducing “Mak Yong”
Week 12- Muzium Negara Site Visit
This week, we have our first presentation. We had our first real client feedback session, and it came with a lot of constructive points:
- We needed to better connect our user research to why we chose Mak Yong — not just because it’s forgotten or from UNESCO.
- The visual design needed to feel more culturally grounded but also attractive to youth.
- We lacked a clear interaction plan and missed opportunities to include gamified elements.
- They encouraged us to explore real Mak Yong practitioners and even suggested possibly capturing a performance using volumetric tech.
This feedback helped us realize that while our idea had potential, it needed stronger cultural roots and a clearer strategy to appeal to our youth target audience.
Week 13 - Final Proposal Outcome
After the feedback, I have a discussion with Yang Zhi Qing she suggested a new direction: Mak Yong X Cyberpunk. Since youth are drawn to modern, edgy aesthetics. I think this is a very good new direction so I quickly assigned again all the task to other group members.
I also help redesigned the presentation slides and research the visual and research more about Mak Yong. I also check everyone got finish their own part or not.
Week 14 - Final Outcome Development
This week, we focused on finalizing the artwork design and mapping out the complete exhibition flow based on our customer journey map. We also prepared the website, event poster, merchandise, and AR glasses prototype.
Week 15 - Final Outcome
In this week I compile all the poster and make the social media mock up and arrange the new presentation slide and ensure everyone task on flow. But because some groupmate cannot commit many workload so I also help them finish their part.

REFLECTION
This project took me through the complete design thinking process—from empathy and contextual research to ideation, prototyping, and final delivery. I contributed across multiple areas, including research, ideation, presentation slide design, task coordination, and even taking on extra work when teammates were unable to commit. Highlights included conducting surveys and interviews at Muzium Negara, analysing data to refine user personas, and compiling insights into actionable design directions. Although I missed the Istana Satu site visit, I stayed updated through my teammates’ documentation and integrated their findings into our design. The creative turning point was embracing Mak Yong X Cyberpunk, which combined tradition with a modern, edgy aesthetic appealing to youth. By the final weeks, I was managing multiple deliverables, including exhibition flow mapping, poster and social media mock-ups, merchandise design, and AR glasses prototype preparation.
Finding
I learned that successful cultural design projects require balancing respect for heritage with innovation to engage modern audiences. User research is most powerful when it is directly linked to design decisions, ensuring every creative choice has a clear purpose. Feedback is not a setback—it is an opportunity to refine and strengthen ideas. I also realised the importance of adaptability, as project directions can change quickly based on new insights or client input. Finally, teamwork is as much about filling gaps and supporting each other as it is about individual contributions; sometimes stepping up for the team ensures the whole project stays on track.
Observation
Over the course of this project, I observed how essential it is to have a clear process, from contextual research to final outcome delivery. Early stages such as user research, site visits, and client meetings provided the foundation for informed decision-making. Feedback sessions with Mr. Mike and the client highlighted gaps we hadn’t considered, such as the need for deeper cultural storytelling, stronger user connection, and more engaging interaction design. The shift from our initial idea to Mak Yong X Cyberpunk showed me how adaptability and openness to new directions can lead to more relevant and exciting outcomes. I also noticed that effective team collaboration depends on clear role assignments, timely updates, and mutual accountability.
