REFLECTION
Experience
Developing the art assets for SeaVive was a challenging experience. In Week 5, I focused on drawing background maps and character design, aligning them with the original theme and visual references. In the following weeks, I took over the remaining art production, including UI elements, obstacles, enemy designs, game cover, and game preview. Managing nearly all the visual aspects of the game independently tested my creativity and discipline. Despite some initial delays, I was able to speed up production and meet the submission deadline in Week 8. The feedback from my lecturer helped me refine my final designs and pay closer attention to visual clarity and functionality.
Finding
This task taught me that art asset creation is not just about drawing it’s about visual storytelling, usability, and alignment with the game’s mechanics and mood. I found that even small elements like button placement and color palette significantly impact the user experience. I also discovered the importance of preparing layered and editable files to facilitate changes during later development stages. Most importantly, I learned how to adapt quickly and take ownership of the full creative pipeline when needed, which greatly improved my confidence and problem-solving skills as a game designer.
Observation
Throughout the art asset development process, I observed that consistent visual style and clarity in concept design are key to building an engaging 2D platformer. Referring back to the mood board and art direction from Task 1 helped maintain visual consistency across backgrounds, characters, and UI elements. I also realized that time management plays a crucial role especially in a solo working environment or when team dynamics change, as happened when my ex-teammate left the project. The pace of progress directly affects the workload, and I had to adjust accordingly.
